VIANDEN: A FAIRY TALE CASTLE

If I had to advise you to visit a castle in Luxembourg: my choice would be made quickly with the Vianden's castle. Besides its strategic position, the castle really looks like a fairy tale castle! Indeed, in 2019, the castle has been designated by CNN as one of the 21 most beautiful castles in the world.

Vianden's castle

ITS ROMAN ORIGINS AND ITS HISTORY

The first traces of the construction of the castle of Vianden date back to the middle of the 5th century (that is to say, its construction began in Roman times!) and continued in Carolingian times. And, after archaeological excavations, archaeologists discovered the castle has been built on the foundations of a Roman castle and a Carolingian refuge!

Subsequently, it was mainly between the 11th century and the 14th century that most of the castle buildings were erected. And, before taking its current form, it underwent several modifications (there are nine different architectural eras, from the 5th century to the present day). What a mix!

Vianden's castle

Otherwise, the castle is also famous for its inhabitants: it was indeed the residence of the powerful counts of Vianden between the 12th and 13th centuries. This dynasty had good relations with the imperial court and was related by blood to the branch of the Capetians (kings of France).

Something remarkable (except its location and architecture) is the presence of a well inside the castle! You know, supplying water to a fortified castle used to be a difficult task. Thus, the inhabitants were dependent on the outside. That's why, this well (54 meters deep) was built in the 12th century to provide water to the castle!

Finally, in 1890, the castle returned to Grand Duke Adolphe of the dynasty of Nassau and remained from this date property of the Grand Ducal family until 1977. On this date, it became the property of the domain of the Luxembourg State by deed of sale. Today, the castle is a monument of European rank, renovated to conserve its historical style.

VIANDEN'S VILLAGE AND CHAIR LIFT

In the Middle Age, castle was the central location of a village. The castle of Vianden doesn't exception to this rule! Indeed, when you arrive to Vianden, you have to cross the village built along the Our's river lower while the castle sits on a rocky outcrop upper. A road climbing the mountain leads to the castle. So, take your time while you go up, to look at the old facades of some cafes, inns... For me, it's a very typical Luxembourgish village to enjoy and visit!

Once you did the visit of the castle (and the climb leading to the castle), I advise you to go to the chair lift just next to the castle and to pay for a descent to take some good pictures of the castle on its rocky outcrop and surrounded by nature. You will also have a nice view of the Vianden's village and you will pass above the Our's river. What an amazing activity to close this visit!
