GREEN EVERYWHERE

I can assure you: Luxembourg is a land of nature and forests! If you want to get away from it all, all you have to do is choose one of the many trails on offer, and off you go...

THE BEST ONE: TRAIL NEXT TO THE BEAUFORT CASTLE

My first and, in my opinion, most unforgettable trail! It's a loop in the Saueruecht nature reserve in the Mullerthal region, famous for its trails.

The loop starts at the castle parking lot and follows a river to a road. At this point, follow the road for a few meters before returning to the hiking trail. After this section, you're in forest only, and I can tell you: it's extraordinary how quiet it is here. Sometimes (for any trail), you can even meet up with someone for several hours, and have the feeling of being alone in the world!

About halfway along the trail, you'll find a bench with a breathtaking view of the Moselle, and therefore of Germany, since this river is the border between Luxembourg and Germany. If you'd like to take a break, now's the time, as the scenery is incredible!

Finally, we return to the trail to finish at Beaufort castle. I strongly advise you to visit it (if you still have some strength left), as it's well preserved and worth a visit!

HOW TO: CHOOSE AND PREPARE YOUR TRAIL

After 4 months in Luxembourg, I now have some experience and good advice to give you if you want to make one! So grab some good walking shoes and let's get started!

First of all, and the most important in my opinion, plan your route! It may sound logical when you put it like that, but believe me, it's necessary and will prevent you from getting lost. To do this, I recommend you follow this website dedicated to Luxembourg and its trails: https://www.alltrails.com/fr/luxembourg

Thanks to it, you'll be able to choose the trail you're interested in and check some important information such as:

  • The distance to cover

  • Approximate time

  • Points of interest (castles, ponds, landscapes, monuments, flora and fauna...)

Then, choose the day of the walk and check the weather: is it sunny that day? Yes ? Then pack light clothing (shorts, T-shirt, cap, sunglasses, etc.) and sun cream! It's easy to get sunburnt under the trees (believe me ;) )! Otherwise, if it's raining, pack an umbrella and warm clothes (raincoat, boots, etc.), or postpone the hike for better weather.

Afterwards, fill your backpack with the essentials. In my opinion, there are 3 essential things to take with you: a water bottle (even if you don't plan to walk for more than an hour), a map of the surrounding area or a map of the trail/loop you want to do (you can take it from your phone or buy one) and, of course, your phone (if you have a problem or are completely lost, your phone is the tool you need!) In addition, don't forget to take a picnic or something to eat if you're planning a long hike. Walking can make you hungry!

Finally, call a friend to walk with you, as it's not only nicer to have someone to talk to (especially if you're planning to walk for 2 hours or more), but also safer! And don't forget the most important thing: enjoy yourself and take photos!

TIPS: AND IF I AM LOST?

Don't worry, the trails in Luxembourg are very well signposted, so you can't get lost! Although there are a few exceptions: for my part, I managed to lose my first trail (and a few others...) My best advice to avoid this problem is: don't follow a trail if there are no signs for it (then, it's not an official trail). Otherwise, don't hesitate to ask people you meet for directions. Final tip: Google Maps is your best friend in this case!
